We have now finished our music video. We have edited all of our footage and added the necessary effects. There is a colour overlay for both the band shots in the room and the shots in the fields. The main change that has been made to the video is that we didn't shoot any Cambridge shots, for example on the River Cam. This is due to many reasons, which included illness to one of the band members, weather issues and work commitments. However, we feel that even though these shots were not captured, we feel that the shots that we did end up capturing to satisfactory. We didn't include as much editing tricks in the final video as we had originally planned, but we feel that the quick editing, effects and well worked shots made up for this. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the final product.

After receiving feedback on our rough cut from the teacher we have decided to not focus on the famous locations and instead just have locations that look good in the shots. We are still thinking of having the River Cam as we like the idea of what we will do on the river Cam and not just the location.

This week we will be capturing the band shots which we can edit and put in place before we shoot the recognizable location shots. The shots we will be shooting will be very similar to the test footage shots.

We have gathered a band together to perform in our video. Their names are Sami, Ollie, Jamie and Michael. Their costume is going to be jeans, hats, t-shirt etc. The location will be a music room. We have chosen this room as it contains a drum-kit and all the suitable instruments required.

Here is our rough cut using the test footage. We have added more footage and more effects. This is the final idea for the video we just need to shoot our actual footage and follow this structure.

Rough Cut Teacher Feedback

Your chosen editing style fits with the tone and rhythm of the track very well; especially the very quickly cut sequences. You need to retain this device throughout the majority of the video in order to keep the attention of the viewer. Actually, it is better to gradually reveal your key devices as the track goes on. Good so far.

We spent a lesson viewing other peoples blog to try and boost the planning makes up by sharing our thoughts on each others videos.

Another real music video example

This is is a music video for the song A-punk by the band Vampire Weekend. this isn't the exact sort of video we are aiming for however it draws some similarities with our idea. Like ours, it is the editing that makes it interesting as the whole video is sped up, which is a technique that we are thinking of using. Also, the background often changes with the band in the same position, which is similar to us in the way that we are planning to cut to different locations.

This is a rough estimate of our shot list we will use for the final video.

Shot 1: The first shot is a long shot of the street of everyday life in the morning (band walks away from camera and walks around the corner / door.

Shot 2- 5: The next shot is a close up shot of the guitar being plugged into the amp and other pieces of equipment being set up.

Shot 6 + 7: Close up shots of bass and drums entering song and will be played in time with music.

Shot 8 - 9: Close up shots of Guitar playing the chords and main tune. (left + right hand)

Shot 10: Close up of singers mouth coming in with Vocals.

Shot 11 - 12: Guitar and Bass Pan up to see band members faces.

Test Footage

We had the chance in class to experiment with some test footage and use the computers to test out our editing techniques and the look we are going for.

We are happy with how the editing tricks look. They are very effective and we will definitely be using them towards our final video. The first few shots are just the simple shots of the instruments. we only used the guitar, just to see how this would fit in with the music. One of the editing tricks we attempted was the one with the stairs. Dave and Adam kept swapping places up the stairs and then we cut it so that it jumped on the beat of the bass. This was a bit of an improvisation, however it looked very effective. the other technique involved the same method, with two or three people swapping places, but we sped the cutting up as it went along and then slowed it down again. Again, this was a bit of an improvisation but like the other technique it looked very effective.

Some Mistakes
We made a few errors. The first shots with Dave, Adam and Matt standing on the grass was hand-held and the shots were not in the same place. Also with the stairs shot, Adam goes but one step every time while Dave goes up two steps but it didn't really matter.

Feedback on Animatic

Most of our feedback on the animatic was good and many people said our ideas were inventive.

We got told that we should look at White stripes 'the Hardest Button to Button' as it shares the same editing techniques and ideas.

Our video will obviously not be as complicated and well made as this one but its the techniques which will be the same.

Our new idea involves focusing completely on the band. There will be different shots of the band playing in different locations. We will use lots of different camera tricks as well as a variety of editing techniques to enhance the quality of the shots. Also these techniques will help keep the audience watching till the end of the song.

Some samples of shots are:

The band playing on a bridge,
The band will rotate in a static motion,
and the band will be on a boat.

These are just initial idea which we will improve at each location depending on many factors, such as number of people in the area.

"Dirty Pretty Things" are an English band fronted by Carl Barât, who formerly was a member of The Libertines. The Band Officially announced there formation in September 2005, after the breakup of The Libertines in 2004. Didz Hammond left the Copper Temple Clause to join the new band alongside Carl Barât's ex-band member drummer Gary Powell, along with guitarist Anthony Rossomando, who had filled in with "The Libertines". Dirty Pretty Things played their first shows in October of that year in Italy and Paris.

Initially, their was a few problems with the band's name. A four-piece band from Salisbury had been playing as "Dirty Pretty Things" since early January 2005. The two groups came to an agreement over the name, and the original band was renamed. An Australian band had also been playing under "Dirty Pretty Things" since 2003, although it also opted to change it. The name was shared by Barât's club nights in venues throughout London; they assumed the name "Bright Young Things" to avoid confusion. So the "Dirty Petty Things" was formed.

After much thought and consideration, we as a group decided to scrap the narrative driven idea due to the fact that it wouldn't have fit in with the music and we were struggling to think a suitable twist for the story.

The idea which we have now decided on is a simple yet effective idea which focuses on the band more. We are looking more towards the editing tricks than cinematic tricks. We will use four people as part of the band and shoot in different locations.

Dirty Pretty Things- Kicks or consumptions

We chose this song because it was the only song that we felt we had a basic idea for. The song is fairly upbeat. The first idea we had involved the singer walking down the street. We decided not to stick with this due to the fact that we couldn't think of enough ideas to go with it.

We had another idea which we are pretty happy with and fell confident could make a good video.
Start off with morning shots of city (song has sounds of cars and horns). A man walks down the street and sees the band setting up their equipment (two main story lines, the band playing and also the man that walks down the road). The man would appear to be a nice guy but would carry on throughout the day being ignorant and being evil.The towards the end of the song you see the band packing away and the guy appears to be nice again.

The shots would start slower and they would become quicker and more cuts would be added when the song kicks in and the tempo is raised.

We looked at Arctic Monkeys 'Leave before the lights come on' track. The video gave us some ideas towards the shot types and shooting style hat we would be after. We also looked at The Verve 'bitterSweet Symphony' fr the same reasons.

We looked at 'She's an eyeful on the alley' which is a student video, which has the same basic concept as our idea. One of the reasons why is that it has the band playing and a separate storyline as well.

This is an image of Mill Road in Cambridge which is a possible idea for a location for our video. It looks urban and sort of run down.

Another song that we considered was song 2- 'Wild birds & Paper floats' by The new York fund. This song was another song that we felt we could make a good video to. It is a completely different pace to the other song that we have considered.

The idea would involve having the guitarist/singer by himself in a room and having another story running alongside.

This is a professional music video of 'Dream catch me' by Newton Faulkner. This is an idea of the sort of video that we would do if we were to chose this song.

This is an idea of location for our backup idea. We have chosen the River Cam in Cambridge as it is tranquil, nice looking, peaceful and has a warmer feel to it than a run down street.
